Before diving into the FAQ, here are the definitions of the main audio formats you can generate with SpeakRadio.
Advertising spot
An advertising spot is a short message (15 to 60 seconds) meant to promote a product, a service or an event. It combines voice-over, background music and sometimes sound effects. It is the go-to format for advertisers on a commercial or local radio station.
Jingle
A jingle is a short audio element (usually 3 to 15 seconds) used to identify the station (station ID), to mark a transition between two shows or to announce the hour (time signal). It is part of the station imaging and shapes the sonic signature of the radio.
Voice-track
A voice-track is a presenter link recorded in advance, designed to sit between two songs in automated programming. Song intro, dedication, traffic update: the voice-track makes the station sound live, even when nobody is in the studio.
Radio segment
A segment is a short editorial format (30 seconds to 3 minutes) on a specific theme: weather, sport, cinema, horoscope, on this day. It comes back regularly at a fixed time and becomes a recognisable appointment for the listener. See our 7 ready-made segments.
Podcast
A podcast is a long-form audio programme (5 to 60 minutes) that can be downloaded and listened to on demand on platforms such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts or Deezer. It can take the shape of an interview, a debate, a narration or an investigation, solo or with several voices.
Intonation
Intonation is the emotional colour given to a voice: sports commentator, warm, journalistic, complicit, advertising, and so on. It is what separates a flat read from a voice that truly performs its text. SpeakRadio offers more than 90 intonations for each of its voices.
Ducking
Ducking is a mixing technique that automatically lowers the background music while the voice is speaking, then brings it back up as soon as the voice stops. It is what keeps the voice always intelligible, without any audible cuts. SpeakRadio applies ducking automatically to all your productions.
Time signal
A time signal is a short jingle (3 to 8 seconds) played right on the hour to announce the change of hour. It gives the station its pulse and helps listeners place themselves in the day. Essential on any professional radio.
Station ID
The station ID is the signature jingle that announces the name of the radio ("92.3, your local station"). It airs several times an hour and is the station's main identity marker.
Liner
A liner is a short piece of copy (5 to 10 seconds) read by a voice actor or a presenter, usually over a music bed, used as a transition between two songs or as a mini-promo ("The best of the 80s, right here"). Widely used to tighten up the sound of a station.
LUFS / Broadcast standards
LUFS (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale) is the unit used to measure perceived loudness by radio and TV broadcasters. SpeakRadio automatically calibrates every production to -16 LUFS, the standard for European radio broadcasting, guaranteeing a consistent level between your productions and the rest of the market.
